COUNCIL TRADING STANDARDS MAKES SAFETY OF PEOPLES’ LIVES A TOP PRIORITY

People in South Ayrshire have been urged to be vigilant when purchasing E-cigs after trading standards seized more than 800 illegal vapes. 

Councillor Philip Saxton urged the people of the area to be more cautious, check and buy “only safe products” from the local retailers. 

The council’s trading standards team joined the government’s bid to crackdown on illegal vape sales by seizing so far 1200 Vapes confirmed to have breached the normal Government requirement. 

Councilor Philip Saxton, South Ayrshire Council’s portfolio holder for housing and community wellbeing, said: “All the seized vapes do not comply with the Government’s laid down regulations and the products are from unknown sources which is classified unsafe for the consumers hence the seizures.” 

He also confirmed the team will continue to monitor compliance in the area and provide advice to retailers selling these products to assist them to comply. 

Recently, the Scottish Government advised businesses registered to sell vaping products to check their stock to ensure they do not breach the requirements of the Tobacco and Related Product Regulations 2016.
