Striking a Balance – Walking Football & Mental Health in Glasgow

By Samuel Ukah

Various studies have highlighted the beneficial impacts of physical exercise on people’s mental health; however, one not-so-traditional sport has been impacting a community in Glasgow. The John Sutton Community Club (JSCC) is a charitable organization that provides free walking sessions every Friday at Firhill Complex, Astro, G3 7NY from 11AM.

Former Motherwell and Heart of the Midlothian striker and now organiser of JSCC, John Sutton, happily told us the reason behind hosting these sessions spotlighting inclusivity and sociability as important aspects.

John Sutton, JSCC Organiser

“We want people to meet, we want people to talk”

“We are very inclusive, we are not too fussed about what level you are, we are not too fussed about age”.

“It’s about giving people a common purpose”.

Providing a free chance to socialise and go outside has proved worthwhile for the regular participants who attend the walking football sessions at JSCC with them emphasising the positive impact on both their physical well-being and mental health.

Javed Ali, Player Manager

Player Manager Javed Ali stopped playing the traditional game for 20 years after breaking his leg but has turned to walking football as it has brought his love back to the sport.

“It was just such a joy to be able to play football again… it’s been a life changer for many many people like me”.

“You’re out in the open, the fresh air, you’re getting to meet people. It really kind of helps you overcome a lot of difficulties people have mentally”.

Jim Cairney, Regalar Player

Jim Cairney shares similar views stating,

“Coming back to it has been really good health wise and fitness wise has been really good, obviously mental wellbeing as well, but I have also lost 6 pounds in weight which is another added bonus”.

Although JSCC is primarily focused on the communal aspect, the team is entering a competitive league in 2024. If you would like to join their community visit their website and Instagram pages linked here.

  1. My husband and I are in our 50s, and while on holiday from Canada, we veer fortunate enough to attend one of John Sutton’s
Sessions and we both enjoyed ourselves immensely! We were welcomed with open arms by everyone there.
Spending some time with locals, getting some much needed exercise, great conversation, not to mention meeting a World class professional footballer, and seeing what it means to the community… what more could one ask for?! Our experience has left us with a fantastic memory to treasure.
Honestly, we need more people like John Sutton all around the world!!!
