Red Power’s Ayr raid as racing returns

By Regan Kelly and Robbie Hanratty

Today marks the first day since March last year that spectators have been welcomed past the gates at Ayr Racecourse.

Five hundred lucky punters turned out today to breath in the freshly cut grass once again.

The Arena has previously been nominated and been a finalist twice in the Racecourse Owners Association Awards and has been named as one of Visit Scotland’s top rated attractions.

The first race started at 13 minutes past 1 this afternoon, and was won by “Red Power”. The £120,000 horse was bought by none other than former Manchester United legend and Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson. This was a joint purchase by the ex manager and former Manchester United and Liverpool player Michael Owen.

That though, was only one of seven races carried out at the grounds today. Although, the gates were opened to spectators two hours previous to the first race.

All facilities have been reopened in line with the latest Scottish Government guidance. Including all bars and restaurants with table booking being mandatory.

With the continuous easing of restrictions and the country slowly entering a sense of normality again, this may just be one of many reopening over the coming months.
