Former Man City goalkeeper Greg Hartley claims that his biggest achievement in football, was winning the 2008 FA Youth Cup playing alongside, who is now a Champions League winner in Daniel Sturridge; “It’s up there with my biggest accolade in football, especially with that team full of premier league players with the likes of Kieran Trippier and your Ben Mee’s, it was a special bunch.”
The current Oldham goalkeeping coach has experienced high’s and low’s in the game, like any footballer and described the mental toughness required to make it to the very top. The 30 year old listed what he believed to be the three main qualities for kids to make it to the top; “This may sound cliché, however determination and dedication would be the main ones and also just giving it your all.”
From playing with world class goalkeepers in Joe Hart and Kasper Schmeichel to then moving abroad to the US, where he stayed for seven years – the Manchester born footballer spoke of the culture change and how much of a positive experience it was for him; ” It’s a massive stage and a culture shock at the beginning, however when you are used to it, the culture is fantastic and the people there are amazing.”
