Colin O’Neill: Robinson not ready for Northern Ireland gig

By Lewis Birrell

COLIN O’NEILL thinks Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson is too inexperienced to manage Northern Ireland.

O’Neill played in Motherwell’s 1991 Scottish Cup winning team and represented Northern Ireland on three occasions.

The former midfielder is impressed with Robinson’s rebuild job at Fir Park but doesn’t think he’s ready for the national hot seat.

“The Northern Irish job? No. I don’t think so. He needs to ply his trade a wee bit more at what he’s doing.” He said.

Current Northern Ireland manager, Michael O’Neill is strongly linked with a move away from Windsor Park and Colin O’Neill insists he’ll be a success wherever he goes.

He added: “Michael O’Neill was managing down south for a few years at Shamrock Rovers and he won all sorts of cups with them so he has a good bit of experience.

“I know the Irish league isn’t as high as the Scottish league but he did well, he brought them from nothing.

“Michael O’Neill is a very smart guy, he’s educated himself as well as playing football too so he’ll know where he’s at.”
