Twenty-five years on from the famous headline “super Caley go ballistic Celtic are atrocious” the phrase was repurposed for their rivals, with Rangers losing in similar fashion to Queens Park on Sunday.
Both games have a lot in common: in 2000 when Celtic lost to Inverness, the result sparked fan outrage at manager John Barnes and he was sacked only two days later.
Now fans from the other side of the city are calling for the same response from Rangers, coupled with the embarrassing result paired is the shocking form in the league which has left Rangers trailing by 13 points.
The only difference between the two results is Caley Thistle took the game to extra time and scored with the last kick of the ball however, Rangers had time to turn the game around, missing a penalty in the 98th minute.
Barry Ferguson, former Rangers captain and current club ambassador was asked to sum up the team this season by uwsnewsroom and his response was one word “worrying”.
Barry, who played more than 300 games for the club thinks the current team isn’t gelling due to social media: “Recently I went to the changing room and the boys were all glued to their phones on social media, when I was playing we were all talking to each other and helping each other.”
Another former player Kevin Thompson, who played with Barry, agreed with this and said: “The players need to be more vocal and get to know each other better.”
Kevin also has a new role within the club as he will be a youth coach and he promises to have one player get promoted to the first team each season.
Many fans are calling for Clement to be sacked, however during a recent interview the manager revealed he feels no pressure in his position and that he doesn’t doubt his own abilities to be able to turn this around.
However it’s looking likely this will be another trophy-less season for the blue side of Glasgow but what can’t be denied is that Rangers have really left their mark in Europe, progressing into the top eight in the league phase, picking up some notable results against Tottenham Hotspurs and OGC Nice; as well as a brave performance against Manchester United.
Rangers return to action in the Europa league on March 6th and 13th against either Anderlecht, Bodø/Glimt, Fenerbahçe SK or FC Twente.
