An Ayrshire perspective on the Assisted Dying Bill

By Laurie Finlayson

The Scottish Parliament will decide on the Assisted Dying Bill soon

HOLYROOD will soon be voting on the Assisted Dying Bill, put forward by Liberal Democrat MSP Liam McArthur. His proposed bill is approaching the Stage 1 deadline.

McArthur is “confident” that his fellow MSPs will back his proposal. The Minister for Victims and Community Safety of Scotland and MSP for Ayr, Siobhian Brown said:”“Assisted dying is a deeply emotive and sensitive issue, one to which I am personally sympathetic. I believe when death is inevitable, individuals should not be forced to endure unnecessary suffering and pain, particularly when the decision is their own.

“I have engaged in discussions with my constituents about this matter and have met with representatives from Dignity in Dying Scotland to better understand their perspectives.

“Initially, I added my name to Mr McArthur’s motion, which has allowed his proposal to proceed to the Member’s Bill stage. Once the Bill is introduced to Parliament for a vote, I will carefully examine the legislation and any amendments to ensure a full understanding before making my decision.”

McArthur’s proposal can be read in full here.
