Local team Ayr United were drawn at home to Hibernian in the round 5 draw, which took place on Premier Sports TV after the Dundee derby last night (20/01).

Following our report earlier this season, Ayr are still flying high in second place of the Championship and they’ve been rewarded with the plum tie at Somerset, after a massive 8-0 win away to Broxburn Athletic in round 4 at the weekend (18/01).

Ayr’s form this season in both the league and cup has been rarely consistent, this tie has given the town and fans a mouthwatering prospect and the chance to measure themselves up against Premier League opposition.

Lifelong Ayr fan Scott White said: “It’s another great draw for the club, bringing Premier league opposition back to Somerset Park. Hibs have been in good form lately, but so have Ayr.”

“Coming to Somerset isn’t easy for any team, the club and fans are going to believe we can win, beating Hibs and progressing to the next round would be huge for the club and the town.”

Dundee won through to round 5 with a hard fought 1-0 win against City rivals United at Dens’ in their televised clash last night.

Self confessed Dundee fan Simon Murray was the hero, stooping at the front post in the first minute, to head home a Finlay Robertson corner and send the home fans into raptures.

Dundee fan Ethan Hampton was also happy with their home draw in round 5: “There is no better feeling than beating your nearest rivals to cement your place as the top team in the City.”

“It’s a very nice draw at home to Airdrie, we played them in the league cup earlier in the season and won 6-1.”

“We’ve just got to beat Airdrie at home and hope that we can avoid any nasty ties, but in saying that I’ve always said I fancy Dundee to beat anyone at home.”

The tasty looking draw also saw Glasgow’s big two avoiding each other, with Rangers drawing Callum Davidson’s Queens Park at home and Celtic getting Raith Rovers at Celtic Park.

Another SPL side St Mirren escaped a potential banana skin on Saturday, overcoming league one side Queen of the South 3-1 in Dumfries, with top goalscorer Toyosi Olusanya grabbing a brace.

The Paisley side will also fancy their chances of getting a place in the quarter finals, after getting a home draw against Hearts.

St Mirren fan Ryan Niven said: “We wanted an away day, so bit disappointed we’re at home, but it’s a winnable game and an opportunity to get into the next round.”

“Hearts at home, never an easy game, it’s definitely not a 100% certainty, but it’s a fixture that if we perform to the levels we can, go out there and get into the next round.”

All fifth round ties are to be played on the weekend of February 8.
