UWS Pyros playing the American way

By Riordan Craig

American football is one of the biggest sports in America, but it is growing in the UK as well.

UWS has its own American football team, the Pyros, who compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues. They play Scotland’s top teams in BUCS Division 1 and they are one of the oldest clubs at UWS.

Training with UWS Pyros is a good opportunity to end up with a new skill, with many students going to a Pyros training session as beginners. They, also, have the chance to represent Team UWS in the competitive squad.

A full team of coaches attached to the club support and run full training sessions, which takes place at Scotstoun on Wednesdays between 6pm and 8pm, and at Glasgow Green on Sundays between 12pm and 2pm.

The team keep a full social calendar when they are not playing, with the annual Superbowl Party being the biggest event of the UWS calendar year.

UWS Pyros started their season against Heriot-Watt Wolverines on the October 27, and face Aberdeen Bulls next on November 17.
