ScotRail have ended their off-peak pilot scheme and rail commuters are now facing a hike in their daily and weekly rail journeys.

Now, a ticket for all trains before 9am will cost double with a train from Glasgow to Ayr costing £20.10 at on-peak times, rather than £13.40.

Ben, a student at the University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr campus, said: “They’re bloody extortionate.

“I travel from Bargeddie, and I’m in two days a week, sometimes three when it comes to certain weeks, but it was costing £8.65, which was more than affordable.

“But now we’ve went from that to nearly paying £15 and on a student budget, it’s not exactly easy.”

The trial was brought in to try and make more people travel by train than car however, the scheme was scrapped on Monday because the number of commuters using trains did not increase.
