Parents of school children slam thoughtless motorists

By Scott Greer

Schools across Scotland are unhappy with parents leaving their car engines on whilst picking up and dropping off their children from school according to a new poll by Asthma + Lung UK.

A survey from the charity has revealed that air pollution from cars fumes can stunt the development for young peoples lungs in the long term.

A parent in Glasgow said this week: “it’s a bloody disgrace that cars are still parking in places they’ve clearly been told not to, never mind polluting the area around the school that kids will be playing or walking around.”

School restricted zones, also known as school safety zone’s, got introduced back in 2019 with yellow zigzag road markings to show that you can’t park without specific circumstances.

The zones are also in place to stop vehicles parking outside the schools to pick up or drop off pupils, as well as make the areas around the school safer.

Since 2019, parents have still parked and dropped off kids in the restricted area causing annoyance with not only teachers but as well as parents.

Idle parking is not only affecting the environment but it’s also stopping things like busses for disabled students as well as food deliveries for the school.

“Obviously every school will be different from each other but the primary my son goes to, the street gets extremely busy with cars so trucks and buses going up that street is a nightmare.”

Drivers also park on the pavements near the school to drop off their kids, causing things such as prams and wheelchair users to have to move onto a busy road to get to school.

When asked on how to solve this solution, the mum of a primary school pupil said: “Walk them up to school rather than driving up to the door, or park further away and turn off your engine, rather than just parking and staying there.”
