Glasgow University student climbs Mount Everest and raises £50,000 for charity

by Gary Denver-Newall

ARDROSSAN man Daniel Grier has scaled new heights having just returned from climbing Mount Everest – the tallest mountain in the world.

And the 21-year-old has already said he would do it again: “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would definitely try to climb it again.”

Daniel, alongside other University of Glasgow’s Mountaineering Club members, tasked themselves to travel to Nepal in September to raise money for the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF).

The team of around 20 students and team leaders from Glasgow University travelled to Nepal at the start of the month and only arrived back yesterday (September 23).

When asked about his training beforehand and if it helped prepare for the climb, Daniel said: “Nothing I had done previously even compares to how challenging it was, people have died trying to climb it so there was that mental block already.”

The team had a week to prepare after landing in the Himalayas, but the hike took two gruelling weeks to complete.

Fortunately the team had no setbacks and injuries as the climb has claimed several lives and aborted missions.

The team held bake sales and bucket collections to gather as much money as they could before they flew to Asia.

The money raised will be used to restore 50 hectares of grassland which has been damaged by man-made or natural disasters, a hectare is the equivalent to 10,000 square meters, so in total they have directly restored over 500,000 square meters
