Timeline of under works Hairmynes and Thorntonhall Farm bridges as a part of East Kilbride enhancement program.

Electrification is the process of replacing conventional diesel-powered trains with more energy-efficient electric trains, marking a significant change in the way rail transportation functions. The selection of Hairmyres and Thorntonhall farms as the main locations for the bridge construction emphasises how strategically significant these locations are for enabling the seamless integration of electric train systems into the larger railway network.
These enhancements will not only improve the efficiency and reliability of rail services but also play a crucial role in achieving the government’s environmental sustainability goals.
In order to make the space necessary to install overhead powerlines beneath the structures, two bridges must be lifted and redecked. Between December 11 and April 9, 2024, engineers will be replacing a bridge at Thornton Road. During this time, traffic will be diverted and the bridge will be closed to vehicles.
Work on a footbridge at neighbouring Eaglesham Court and Hairmyres station will commence on December 11. There will be a walkway diversion in place through February 21st. After being abandoned for some years, a third bridge next to Thornton Farm will be destroyed.
Important components of the project will be completed over the Christmas and New Year break, requiring 29 hours of nonstop work:
Thornton Road bridge removal and replacement will take place between 22:00hrs on December 24 and 07:00hrs on December 26.
Eaglesham Court’s footbridge will be removed and replaced between 22:hrs on December 24 and 07:00hrs on December 26.
Bridge near Thornton Farm will be demolished between 22hrs on December 31 and 07:00 on January 2. Prior to the commencement of Boxing Day train services, work will be finished until the morning of December 26.
