The Influence of Student Residence on a Successful Degree

By Daniel Cecura

This article explores the vital role of student accommodations. Beyond living spaces, these residences are hubs of learning and connection, shaping the student experience. From fostering collaboration to providing a sense of community, student accommodations are essential contributors to academic success and personal growth.

UWS Residences in Ayr are designed to show by example that student residences are more than just rooms – they are the link of an academic community and the link to university. Managing Director Alison Gray always proactively seeks contact with students and emphasises that the UWS Residences place great emphasis on ensuring that students feel comfortable and can concentrate fully on their studies.

“I have a lot of interaction with the students, because I feel that’s a strong part of my job.”

A 24/7 security service is on site to ensure that students are well looked after. It plays a special role in the student residence in Ayr and provides additional security and a focus on the university. Campus Assistant Ian Mason has been employed for eight years and emphasises that he has a special relationship with the students and is often asked for advice and help.

“If you’re comfortable in the environment you’re living, it helps you concentrate on your work.”

The Class Foundation and its research partners conducted a survey, the Student Living Monitor (SLM), spanning 40 countries and engaging over 3,300 participants to understand the link between student mental health and accommodation environments. The survey revealed that students’ mental health scores, measured by the internationally recognized MHI-5 tool, are slightly below the benchmark for good mental health, emphasizing the need for enhanced mental health support.

This is also the reason why Alison Gray attaches great importance to the fact that the external conditions in the student residence in Ayr are conducive to a positive mental state, studying and socialising.

“Our accommodation must ensure that students feel comfortable and can sleep well so as not to put a strain on their mental health. It’s vital to their success of their overall UWS experience.”

The student residence’s organisation team also regularly organises events such as film evenings, karaoke nights, quizzes and wellbeing activities. In addition, students are always kept up to date via the socials.
