Pressure Cooker Tie at Fir Park as Well Face Gers

By Kyle Sharkie

Rangers face Motherwell tonight at eight o’clock, with the match having major repercussions at the top end of the table no matter the result.

Fir Park will have a tense atmosphere as both of the in-form teams look to further their league challenges. If the tide swings within the Well’s favour they could be in touching distance of third place. For the Ger’s it’s all about keeping up that title chase, staying on Heart’s tail and putting the pressure on their city rivals. A draw would be treated as defeat for both sides as Motherwell could drop crucial points in their venture for the best chance at European football. Rangers could lag behind both Celtic who have a game in hand and hearts who currently sit six points clear.

Rangers come into the game looking the slightly better side, unbeaten in eight league games compared to Motherwell’s five. The last meeting between the two ended in a narrow defeat for Motherwell with Rangers being the one nil victors at Ibrox however the Steelmen did not back down, beating Celtic the very next game.

Pre-Match Talk

Rangers Head coach Danny Röhl spoke to the press pre-Motherwell where he said:

“The Manger’s doing a great job there, it’s a tough place, the home game here was a game with a lot of chances on both sides. We know what we expect in this game and for us it’s the next big challenge. We go there  with confidence, with ambitions and we have to do a lot of things right to win such a game.”

Head coach Jens Berthel Askou previewed the game from a Motherwell perspective saying:

“I was quite optimistic and confident that we could be effective and successful in our approach, the first performance against Rangers lifted that optimism and that confidence. The target is to win on Wednesday, we’ll see where we are closer to the end of the season we’re in a good position to make top six and that is our first big aim for the season. Danny has had the team for a while now so it’s a lot easier to see what he wants to do with the team, he’s better them better structured defensively and disciplined, they have recruited a lot of players, many of them have physical traits which works well for they have really, really been good on, attacking set play. It’s going to be a big focus point for us on Wednesday that we have to shut that down.”

To sum it up it is do or die for either side if Rangers don’t win, they could effectively write off their title race. If Motherwell fail to at least pick up points Hibs are not far behind ready to pounce at their position.
