Röhl Rejects Rangers. Muscat the man?

by Kevin Kennedy

Rangers’ search for a new manager continues after German coach, Danny Röhl, turns down opportunity to take over at Ibrox. German football journalist, Mark Lovell spoke exclusively to UWS as he gave his thoughts as to why the former Sheffield Wednesday boss would have been the right fit.

Mark (pictured below) gave his insight into the characteristics Danny could have brought to the role.

Danny Rohl is cool, calm, calculated — a modern, meticulous coach with a very clear identity. He’s not one for drama, which might actually be exactly what Rangers need right now…”

Lovell also explained how Röhl’s prior experience, working under constraints in his last job, would have given him the knowledge to steady the ship at Rangers.

“…His work at Sheffield Wednesday spoke volumes: he inherited a club in turmoil… His preparation, intensity and communication are elite-level. He has that German precision but also emotional intelligence, which helps him connect with players and staff alike. For a club like Rangers — with huge expectations, constant scrutiny, and a demanding environment…”

If the German were to take the job, Mark believes Rangers fans would have been in for a treat with the style of play.

“…Rohl comes from the Ralf Rangnick school — high pressing, high tempo, structured aggression without the ball. He likes his teams to be brave, compact…

After the fans’ harsh treatment of previous manager, Russell Martin, Mark trusts that the former Owls coach could handle the pressures of a very demanding gers support.

“…Sheffield Wednesday wasn’t an easy job — that was chaos from day one — and he stayed calm throughout. That told me a lot. He’s worked at Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Southampton — big environments, high expectations. He’s seen pressure close-up. The Rangers hot seat is unique, no question…”

Mark took an in-depth look into Röhl’s potential Rangers squad before taking the hot seat.

“Rangers already have a strong base — enough talent to work with. Danny would focus on maximising what’s there first: stabilising, creating structure, and then targeting key upgrades in critical areas…

He further explained the profile of player in which the young German coach could have potentially looked to bring in to strengthen his Rangers side.

“…His ideal players are athletic, intelligent, and adaptable — those who can handle the physical demands of pressing football and make good decisions under pressure. Think high work rate, tactical awareness, and hunger. He’s more about developing players than chasing names.”

Finally, Mark gave us his prevailing thoughts as to why Rangers may have passed up a golden opportunity to bring in a young and impressive coach.

“Muscat might be the favourite, but Rohl’s body of work at Sheffield Wednesday compares very favourably. He’s young, driven, and already proven he can turn a club around under pressure…”

Kevin Muscat is now a clear favourite to take over on the blue side of Glasgow.

What exactly does the former Rangers player have to offer when it comes to the coaching side of the game? I also caught up with Japan-based, Asian football journalist, Dan Orlowitz (picture below) as he gave us the low-down.

Dan believes Muscat’s previous experience at Rangers, as a player, gives him the edge over any of the other candidates.

“I think he loves the club and he’s passionate about seeing them win. His time there was relatively short, but obviously winning the treble in that 02-03 season meant a lot to him and he’s continued to carry that torch 20+ years later…”

What kind of style can Rangers fans expect from a Muscat team?

“Muscat’s teams play a very positive attacking style – building up and pushing forward, short passes to maximize possession, a high press to keep opponents from creating momentum…”

He also elaborated on the versatility of the Australian’s previous teams. This potentially is something we could see as he transfers his game to the Scottish leagues.

“…At the same time if you look at his time at Yokohama F. Marinos he was willing to play more pragmatically when the situation required for it.”

Orlowitz believes that Muscat is more than ready to take the reigns at Rangers.

“…Muscat has won championships in are all more competitive than the Premiership (which is not a statement on the quality of play in the Premiership but merely the reality of it largely being a two-horse race, this season aside). So in that sense he’s ready…”

All eyes are now set on Ibrox to see who they appoint as their next manager.
