ANOTHER year another Valentine’s Day approaches however Galentine’s is fast becoming just as popular on the calendar.

First coined in the TV sitcom Parks and Recreation Galentine’s is celebrated on February 13 – the day before Valentine’s Day – and is an occasion for woman to celebrate female empowerment.

The whole day is themed around celebrating female friendship and being thankful for having each other in their lives. Celebrated since the episode aired in 2010, woman come together to create memories and be comfortable in each others company.

UWS Newsroom spoke to some Ayrshire woman to find out their thoughts on the occasion and there were mixed views.

Amanda Maitland, a librarian in the UWS Ayr campus, said: “When you have been married for 31 years Galentine’s isn’t a thing.”

However, student Charlotte Richardson thought differently: “It’s good yeah getting to spend the day with your girlfriends drinking.”

And one other female UWS student agreed: “It’s empowering you can spend the day doing something romantic not with a partner but with your friends.”
