Family business: Eilidh and Struan Shaw, Cycling siblings

By Alexander Cruickshanks

This week UWS students attended a press conference at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow to interview cycling duo, Eilidh and Struan Shaw.

At just 19 and 17 years old theses young Scots are the future of the cycling scene in Scotland and the UK with Eilidh already making waves, achieving her first pro contract with UAE Development Team.

Eilidh has been on a bike since the age of nine, so this success has been long in the making. She said:” “I’ve been in this sport now since I was, maybe, nine years old, so like, ten years and then everything just all came at once, it was really special.

“It takes quite a lot. Because I have been in it so long, I wanted something out of it in the end and I think that’s what drove me to make this year really count. I’ve had loads of support from Scottish Cycling and my team as well.”

The deal is to last until 2026 and was awarded to her on the back of a break-out 2024 season. She achieved her first ever UCI podiums at the Tour De Feminin and picked up two domestic wins along the way.

Her younger brother Struan is also a talented athlete, racing for Scotland across the continent. His goal is to follow in his sisters’ footsteps and make it to that pro contract.

Struan said: “That’s the main one. A pro win is the biggest thing for a pro rider.

“That’s the end goal.”

These two are great young people with an extremely positive and competitive attitude that drives and propels them towards their ultimate goals. The future of Scottish Cycling is looking bright with them on the rise,

Hopefully they can continue to succeed and improve so they can bring more Scottish eyes to cycling witness their long careers ahead.
