Rising stars in Scottish cycling

By Hamzah Amir Ahmed

From among the many successful athletes that come from the UK, many come from England, but Scotland has had their fair share of incredible talent over the years.

Sir Chris Hoy, Graeme Obree, Katie Archibald and Eileen Roe are just a few of the successful cyclists that Scotland has produced over the years but is the country on the verge of giving rise to more stars?

Eilidh (19) and Struan (17) Shaw are not only promising cyclists but also brother and sister. With two domestic wins and a podium finish at the Tour de Feminin, the 19-year-old’s early success has propelled her standing in Scottish cycling and it has earned her a two-year contract with the UAE Development team.

It’s not been the easiest time for Eilidh. In 2023, injuries were a huge problem, but she refused to give up and battled through the adversity, she said: “It takes a lot [to come back from injury].

“I think because I’ve been in it for so long, I wanted something out of it in the end and I think that’s what drove me to make this year really count.”

Like his older sister, Struan has had an excellent start to his career. Multiple top-end finishes and representing Scotland’s youth team.

Struan has big ambitions and dreams of having a “pro contact” one day. He said: “That’s the main one.

“A pro win is the biggest thing for a pro rider.

“That’s the end goal.”

While the Shaw siblings aren’t in direct competition with each other, the benefits of having someone so close to you in the same field only ever helps.

Struan on having his sister by his side said: “For training it’s always a lot easier.

“Usually you’ll be out by yourself [but] sometimes me and Eilidh go out together which makes it a lot easier.”

Having enjoyed so much success already in their respective journeys, Eilidh and Struan Shaw are already well on their way to making a name for themselves. With support from Scottish cycling, the sky is truly the limit for these two young and remarkable riders.
