On today’s visit UWS News were welcomed by Glasgow Caledonian Crushers, who are a wheelchair rugby club. I caught up with a few members of the team and we chatted about the community that is within the Ruby Club and also out with the rugby club on a global scale.

Jennifer Lang said: “there is nothing better than getting tore in to a game of wheelchair rugby. She has always been an admirer of Rugby and she stated that she has always loved running Rugby watching at Murray Filed and what not. She only heard about Wheelchair Rugby in the 2012 Paralympics and she thought it was awesome but didn’t know very much about it”. Scotland has not got a national team as of yet within Wheelchair Rugby but many hope it’s a thing within the near future

Chris Dempster said: “the wheelchair I use for playing wheelchair rugby is different from the wheelchair I would use for day today use. On a normal day chair you are higher up so you would use a different muscle when making your wheelchair mobile”. To participate in Wheelchair Rugby you need a sport-specific manual wheelchair. These are designed to handle the hits and crashes that occur during the game. Athletes can have chairs that are measured and made to their specific requirements to suit their function and style of play. Players also require a mouthguard, shoulder pads, headguard and sometimes rugby mits.
