AYR United goalkeeper Greg Fleming believes his side have a “chance of winning” the Irn-Bru Cup after beating Falkirk 1-0 at Somerset Park on Friday.
The Honest Men reached the quarter-finals of the tournament with an extra time victory over Championship rivals Falkirk.
Gary Harkins’ 115th minute goal was enough to set up a tie with St Mirren, who defeated Hibernian 2-1 at Easter Road, in the last eight.
Fleming, 30, is optimistic of his side’s cup chances: “We are looking forward to the next round. It’s a competition that we have got a chance of winning so I think you have got to keep trying. You never know what can happen.”
The former Stenhousemuir stopper was heavily involved in the match, making several key saves – but took no credit for Falkirk’s missed penalty on 70 minutes.
“I didn’t save it, it hit the post. I think maybe if it were on target, I would have saved it.
You’ve got no pressure on you as a goalkeeper for a penalty so if you don’t save it nobody is upset but it’s nice that it didn’t go in. I can’t really complain.”
Ayr scored an impressive victory against the Bairns, and Fleming believes they have bred confidence with recent Championship form.
“We have got the belief from the league, playing against teams I think we have shown that in the last six or seven games. We have only lost once so I think, as I said, we played well.”
The quarter-final tie at the Paisley 2021 Stadium will take place on the weekend of November 12.
